Planning Our First Asian Adventure

After months of work without a proper break, we decided to escape to somewhere warm before winter arrived. The Philippines emerged as the perfect choice—a destination that had been recommended by friends, offered tropical warmth, and represented a complete departure from our usual travel preferences.

This was my first real experience traveling in Asia beyond a brief layover in Shanghai. With limited prior knowledge about the country, I knew only that the Philippines was geographically scattered, the people were welcoming, and the food was exceptional. We were ready for something different.

Understanding the Philippines

The Philippines is an archipelago of remarkable scale, comprising thousands of islands scattered across the South China Sea and Pacific Ocean. With around 7,641 islands in total, approximately 2,000 of them are inhabited, creating a unique landscape of both remote and bustling communities.

First Impressions: Manila and the Country of Contrasts

We landed in Manila, where local taxi drivers attempt to monopolize airport access by discouraging independent travel. We chose to walk to our hotel instead, beginning our journey on our own terms.

Manila immediately revealed what would become the defining characteristic of our entire trip: the Philippines is a country of great contrasts. The stark divide between wealth and poverty is impossible to ignore. Arriving just after typhoon season, we witnessed nature's destructive power combined with poverty and informal settlements that painted a complex portrait of the nation.

A Lesson in Living

Beyond the typical tourist attractions, I discovered something profound. While we in developed nations accumulate possessions and still struggle with contentment, the locals—despite their challenging circumstances—seemed to embrace life as it came. Many weren't waiting for tomorrow's promises; they were genuinely enjoying today.

This perspective became a gift. Witnessing the contrast between wealthy and impoverished communities deepened my appreciation for what we have and how fortunate our daily lives truly are.

Our Island-Hopping Itinerary

We planned an ambitious 10 internal flights to explore the scattered islands. Here's where we ventured:

Northern Route

  • Manila - The bustling capital and our entry point
  • Cebu - A major hub and cultural center
  • Sigihor - A quieter island escape
  • Siargao Island - Remote and easternmost, where only the Pacific stretches beyond. One of our favorites.
  • Puerto Princessa - Gateway to natural wonders
  • San Vincente - Undeveloped and pristine
  • Palawan - The stunning island province
  • El Nido - A paradise destination

Southern Route

  • Siquijor Island - Probably our absolute favorite, with mystical charm and genuine warmth
  • Dumaguete - A charming university city
  • Tagbilaran - Located on Bohol Island, known for natural attractions

Reflections on the Journey

This trip was more than just tropical beaches and island hopping. It was a transformative experience that challenged my assumptions about happiness, wealth, and living in the moment. The Philippine people's resilience and ability to find joy despite adversity became the most valuable souvenir we brought home.

Whether you're seeking relaxation, adventure, or personal reflection, the Philippines offers something profound beneath its picture-perfect island scenery.
